Critical and Reflective Reading

The Article I choose:

Class work – Reflection of “Baudelaire and Modernity”

Baudelaire, he was called “a renegade poet, a syphilitic art critic, a disaffected and alienated student”. His famous collection of poems “Les Fleurs Du Mal” is also a collection of modernity thoughts.

In the time of modernity’s born, his poem is a great revolt. These poems didn’t praise the beauty and good things, they describe nothingness and spite.

In this article, it described the “Heroism of modern life”. It’s his great challenge to the whole society which needs to be changed, and finally, he succeeded form “looking for the artists who could capture modernité or the pulse of his own time”.

Baudelaire’s thought influenced modernism art creating. It gave everyone a conclusion: the creation of modern life, the poems, the paintings – they could be used to describe ugly things, normal things, even everything happened around.

It reminds me to connect this situation with Nietzsche’s famous theory, “Gott ist tot”, the age of “the last men”, the “Twilight of the idols”… The normal code from Christian was collapsed at that time, which brought people new thoughts of “themselves”. This is “modernity, the ephemeral, the fugitive, the contingent, the half of art whose other half is the eternal and the immutable…”

Christmas Holiday Blog Post

Christmas Holiday Blog Post

This post is used to describe the course I want to apply next year.

The course I choose is graphic design. Actually, it is not a good course to choose.  I clearly know that I am not good at artworks and haven’t any design skill. But luckily this world needn’t every worker be talent so I guess I still have a chance.

The reason I choose graphic design as my course basically because I can do graphic deisgn works. I start learning how to do books many years ago, like in junior high school. Then I found I can also deisgn posters, cards, VIs etc.

There are not many interesting things happened when I study it by myself. Studying is always tired and fulfilling. I don’t think good mood will bring people good ideas. Suffering is also important for best design works and stories.

Personal Project Proposal

Personal Project Proposal

I clearly know Project 3 is one of the most important things in Level 3 course. I did a lot of work before I knew the title of this project. During Christmas holiday, I bought and read many books, got familiar with the unknown area and found some interest with that. After the holiday, I still keep doing research in those areas.

I have a complete plan for my project. When I studying graphic design, I noticed this is a subject with connecting with social media. When I did my research, I learned a lot about fine art. Both artworks and the history. Thought I am not good at illustration, there was an idea appeared in my mind, I planned to use graphic design way to describe other fields.

In this conception, the story which I want to express is connecting with my project 1 and 2. At this time, I will describe the story of “ancient artists in the modern world”. I watched a lot of

BBC Documentaries, I took note of them and bought books of famous artists’ graphic work. I also went Tate Britain, Tate Modern and British Museum to visited exhibition. For example, “Impression in London, French artists in exile 1870-1904” is one of them and it gave me a good view of the impressionist painting.

In this project, I will use Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to create my final outcome. I will also use the Book Binding workshop. The outcome of my project will probably be a suitcase or file filled with magazine, papers, cards…

But there’s some question I can’t explain. In the last term, one of the course teachers told me this course is the place which we can express our ideas and find the possibilities of our artwork. This is not a company or office, we needn’t consider the market or how to sale our production. So I think my intended audience is “nobody”, and my work towards producing is “nothing”.

If my audience is “nobody”, which means everyone can watch this work. It could be exhibited whatever I want or don’t want. People can do everything they want when they watch this artwork. They can take the book from it and read, they can steal the paper or card, they can discuss the meaning of that work with their friends… But at that time, one thing I won’t do is explaining. It will restrict the thinking. Thought everyone has different ideas with the creator, but these ideas is important to exist.

The creator has the right of silence, and the silence is an important part of the work. Explanation will reduce the possibility of artwork. There is no rule said an artwork should be designed for someone and it should be explicable.

Reflection about Repurpose

Reflection about Repurpose:

I think Project2: Repurpose is a difficult title for me when I heard it. I used to designed many books in different papers or materials, but none of them is related to “garbage”.

At that time I was also thought I want to do Game Design next year. So I used about – 5 minutes to consider what will be my final outcome. Then I think that will be a game guide book.

I will design a game with the garbages I find, then use a book to record how a player play it. It is a book like personal notebook when someone write how him or her feeling when they play the game. I will put many collage arts in it, so actually the book which I want to design is also a kind of “repurpose”.

To reach this outcome, I do many research to design the background of game. These are resource that I put in the book. I also read some other artists or fictionists’ work, they gave me many design ideas. I also learned how to use After Effects and InDesign in workshop lesson.

Reflection about Toolbox

About Toolbox:

At the first one and two weeks we were introduced to workshops in school. I am interested in Letterpress and decided to use it in my postcode project. It seems very easy when teachers did it and gave us an example. But when I did it by my own hands, the inks went everywhere and my papers were suddenly full of strange graphs and lines. Although that’s a big challenge, with teacher’s help. I finally got my Letterpress papers.

Reflection about Postcode Project

Postcode Project

My postcode: SE1

Keywords: Nightview, Underground

Outcome: Magazine

Some ideas about my postcode project:

I didn’t choose SE1 in my own. It’s a random code number. But I thought I will do a magazine ( or a book ) when I choose this postcode. SE1 is not an area full of beautiful things or romantic atmosphere, there are broken wine bottles, homeless guys with their dog, empty chip bags… And I thought ‘that’s it’ at that time. I want to describe this area in dark, show the unstable part of the view. Everyone hold my magazine will read a story not about good views and comfortable things.

So I shot a lot of night view and underground. They are black and easy to make readers feel afraid.

Reflection about Postcode Project:

When I doing my postcode project, I got a few challenges form teachers and the project itself. At first I thought it is easy, but when I reading the brief in moodle and thought it deeply, I found there is something difficult.

The first question I should consider is the workshop. Teachers asked us to use two different workshops in our project, one should be in our out come. When I do designing, I am used to design things in Adobe software. But I never think to use things like letterpress or screen-printing in my work. I tried to book the workshops and use them. With the teachers’ help I got fun from them. Soon I realized that leave my comfortable zone is very important, just stay in the area I familiar with can’t learning new skills and have more ideas.

The second question is to touch and think. Teachers asked us to do primary research and secondary research in our project. I always do these things by my own. But when I follow the steps which I learnt in class, I went to different places to took photos, interviewed people, or ate something. These research methods made me felt I am actually in my project. More and more ideas came to my mind. To feeling the environment in your work background, it is the thing I learn from research.

The third one is to appreciate. I looked some of my classmates’ work, and try to understand what they’ve done in their project. I got many new and neoteric thoughts. It makes me think about other possibilities about express ourselves with designing skills.

To draw a conclusion, I found my deficiencies in the Postcode project, I want to change myself and learn more things from everything I have done or I will do. The thing I need to remember now, is to remind myself: keep working hard and enjoy working hard. That’s the sentence which Trudi said in the Postcode project lesson.

First Week In LCC & London

Homework in 13th-17th Sep,2017

My first week in London:

I book the ticket from Shanghai to London in Emirates. When I arrived in London, it’s nearly night. I noticed my phone fixed the position and showed my time. It’s about 8 P.M., but the sky was still light. The color included yellow and grey, just like a cup of Lemon martini. The air in London is cold but fresh, people wore coat or shirt with long sleeves. That’s the first impression which a British city gave me.

London is not as flourishing as I used to thought. There are not too much high buildings, but most housing estates are retro style. When I walking around the city, I will actually feeling this is a city with history and special culture.
